The Melbourne Cup Party, Monday November 3rd.
In 2007, nearly 400,000 racing fans attended Australia’s annual Melbourne Cup Carnival, which is far more than just a horse race. It is four days of festivities, plus the November 4th, race, and is now an official public holiday, throughout Australia.
Melbourne Cup Day, that dates back to1861, is heralded as the race that stops the nation. Run at Flemington Race Track in Melbourne, the race has seen winners such as Archer in 1871, who won a purse of 70 Pounds and a gold watch, Phar Lap in 1930, Makybe Diva in 2004 and Efficient in 2007. Who will win in 2008? Well come on out on Monday November 3rd and place your bets, make some money and have a great time.
We will be the Turf Lounge, “A lounge unlike any other”, at 330 Bay Street, Toronto, just north of Adelaide, where we have reserved space for 60 AWS Members and Guests. We will have our traditional Best Ladies hat Contest and our own sweepstakes. The Turf Lounge is understated elegance with relaxed sophistication. We will be serving, finger-foods with an Australian flare, served from the Reception Menu. Wines, spirits and beer are available from your servers, cash or credit cards accepted.
The Turf Lounge provides direct, multi-screen live TV feed from Flemington Park, seven races to bet before the Cup, plus terminals for betting for AWS Members and their guests.
The Australian Wine Society (AWS) of Toronto is a not-for-profit organization devoted to the enjoyment of the wines of Australia. Through exposure to, and education about the wines and wine regions of Australia, the Society seeks to encourage, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, a greater awareness of the wine varietals, the diversity and the styles of Aussie wines. The opportunity to try a wide range of wines makes it easier for members to decide what types they might want to purchase through wine agents, the LCBO, Vintages monthly releases and the Classics Catalogue.
